Choose stick length by height. Standing upright, the top of the stick should reach about your hip bone.

|---|---|---|---|
| Under 4'0" | Under 122 | 5–7 | 28" |
| 4'0"–4'3" | 122–130 | 7–8 | 30" |
| 4'4"–4'7" | 132–140 | 8–10 | 32" |

Between sizes? Go shorter for close control and dribbling, longer for reach and hitting. FIH rules cap stick length at 105 cm (41.3").
Juniors usually need 28" to 35". The top of the stick should reach the hip bone. A stick that is too long makes dribbling hard and encourages bad posture, so avoid buying one to grow into.
Wooden and fiberglass sticks are forgiving and affordable for young beginners. Junior composite sticks with a little carbon suit kids who play several times a week.
We compare junior sticks from 15 brands. Grays (10), Brabo (10), TK (7), Princess (7), Gryphon (6), Osaka (5), STX (3), Kookaburra (3), The Indian Maharadja (3) & Mazon (2). Use the brand filter at the top of the page to compare them side by side, or open a brand page to see everything it makes.
Most players buy junior sticks together with other essentials. Compare field hockey sticks, field hockey balls, field hockey shin guards, field hockey goggles & face masks, field hockey gloves, field hockey goalie equipment & field hockey shoes & cleats, or start from the FieldHockeyWorld homepage.

Usually 30"–32", depending on height. Check that the top of the stick reaches the child's hip bone.
It isn't recommended. Cutting a stick changes its balance and can weaken it. Choose a stick made in a junior length.
When the top of the stick sits clearly below the hip bone. Check every season.
Most juniors control the ball better with a standard or mid bow while they learn.
Wood or fiberglass for young beginners, and junior composites with a little carbon for regular players.
