How to Choose a Field Hockey Grip

Your grip is the only part of the stick you touch, so it has a big effect on control and comfort. Choose by:

  1. Feel. Chamois feels soft and tacky. Textured grips like Grays Twintex give a firm, ribbed hold.
  2. Weather. Towelling and textured grips perform best in rain and with sweaty hands.
  3. Thickness. Add a second grip, or choose a cushion grip, for a thicker handle and less vibration.
  4. Durability. Textured synthetic grips last longest. Chamois needs replacing more often.

How to Re-Grip a Field Hockey Stick

  1. Remove the old grip and any loose glue from the handle.
  2. Start at the top of the handle and wrap downward at a slight angle.
  3. Overlap each turn by about a third for an even surface.
  4. Finish just above the head and secure the end with stick tape.

Replace your grip whenever it becomes slippery, torn or flat. For regular players, that is usually every few months.

FAQ

Field Hockey Grips & Grip Tape FAQs

Buying questions first, then questions about the products on this page.

What is the best grip for a field hockey stick?

It depends on preference: chamois for a soft, tacky feel, textured or Twintex grips for a strong hold in all weather, and cushion grips to reduce vibration.

How often should I replace my hockey grip?

When it becomes slippery, torn or flat. For regular players, that is usually every few months.

Can I put two grips on a hockey stick?

Yes. Many players add a second grip for a thicker, more cushioned handle.

Is grip tape the same as a grip?

A replacement grip covers the whole handle. Stick tape is thinner and is used to finish a grip or protect the head of the stick.
