How to Choose Field Hockey Gloves

Field hockey gloves protect your knuckles and the back of your hand from sticks and the ball, especially in tackles and on reverse-stick play. Here's how to choose:

  1. Decide on protection level. Defenders and penalty-corner runners need a hard-shell protective glove (for example Grays International Pro or TK 1). Midfielders and attackers often prefer lighter fingerless gloves (for example Grays Touch or Anatomic Pro).
  2. Choose the hand. All sticks are right-handed, so your left hand sits at the top of the stick, facing the ball. That is why most protective gloves are left-hand only.
  3. Check the fit. Measure around your hand below the knuckles and use the size chart below. A glove that is too big twists on the grip.
  4. Match the glove to the surface and season. Indoor gloves are thinner for indoor hockey. Full-finger winter gloves add warmth and grip in cold weather (see cold weather gear).

FAQ

Field Hockey Gloves FAQs

Buying questions first, then questions about the products on this page.

Do field hockey players need gloves?

Gloves are optional for field players but strongly recommended for defenders and penalty-corner runners. Goalkeepers wear separate hand protectors.

Which hand does a field hockey glove go on?

Usually the left hand, because it sits at the top of the stick and is most exposed to the ball and other sticks.

What size field hockey glove do I need?

Measure around your hand below the knuckles: about 7–7.5 in is S, 7.5–8 in is M and 8–8.5 in is L. Check the brand's chart.

Are indoor and outdoor gloves different?

Yes. Indoor gloves are thinner and more flexible. Outdoor protective gloves have harder shells for hard hits.

Should I buy one glove or a pair?

One left-hand glove is enough for protection. Buy a pair if you want grip and warmth on both hands in cold weather.

Which brands make gloves?

We compare 47 gloves from 16 brands: The Indian Maharadja (7), Grays (5), TK (5), Harrow (5), Brabo (5), STX (4), Osaka (4) & Gryphon (3).

What are the best gloves for beginners?

For new players, start with STX Youth Polar Cub Glove Medium-Large & Brabo Youth F2.1 Indoor Full Finger Field Hockey Gloves Small. These are listed as beginner-level, so they are more forgiving and easier to use.
