Conversions are approximate and vary by brand. Leave a thumb's width at the toe, and consider half a size up if you wear thick socks over shin guards.
Most field hockey is played on artificial turf, where turf shoes are the best choice and molded cleats are often not allowed. Many US high-school teams still play on grass, where cleats give better grip. If you play on both surfaces, keep a pair of each.
Growing players need light, flexible shoes with enough room to grow, but not so much that the foot slides. Check the size each season. Junior turf shoes, such as the adidas Hockey Youngstar, are designed for smaller feet and lighter players.

On artificial turf, turf or hockey shoes with flat rubber soles and small studs. On grass, molded cleats. Indoor hockey needs non-marking indoor shoes.
On grass, molded soccer cleats are usually fine. On artificial turf, most venues require turf shoes instead.
Most follow standard sizing, but brands vary. Leave a thumb's width at the toe and consider half a size up for thick socks.
Running shoes lack lateral support and grip on turf, and they wear out quickly on sand-based pitches. A turf shoe is safer.
Typically one season of regular play. Sand-based pitches wear outsoles faster than water-based turf.
