Field Hockey Goggles vs Masks Chart 2026

Goggles and corner masks do different jobs. This chart shows when each is used and what to look for.

NFHS (US high school) field hockey requires eyewear that meets ASTM F2713. College and international play do not require goggles, but players may choose to wear them.

When can you wear a field hockey mask?

Defenders may wear a face mask while defending a penalty corner, and must take it off once the corner is over. The mask should fit closely to the face. Many leagues require it to be a colour that contrasts with the team shirt.

What to look for

FAQ

Field Hockey Masks FAQs

Buying questions first, then questions about the products on this page.

Do field hockey players wear masks?

Only defenders, and only while defending a penalty corner. Goalkeepers wear a full helmet instead.

Is a corner mask the same as goggles?

No. Goggles are worn all game (and are required in US high-school play). A corner mask covers the face and is worn only during penalty corners.

What size corner mask do I need?

Masks come in youth and adult sizes. Choose one that fits closely to your face without gaps around the edges.

Do I need a mask and goggles?

Corner masks are worn only while defending a penalty corner. If your league requires goggles, you still need goggles for the rest of the game.

What colour should a corner mask be?

Many leagues require a colour that contrasts with the team shirt. Bright colours are most common.

Which brands make masks?
