Who wears a helmet in field hockey?
Only goalkeepers wear helmets. A field hockey goalie helmet has a fixed face cage and should be worn with a throat guard. Field players wear goggles (and corner masks when defending penalty corners) instead.
Fit and safety
The helmet should sit snugly without moving when you shake your head, with the cage clear of your nose and chin. Replace any helmet with a cracked shell or a bent cage.

FAQ
Field Hockey Helmets FAQs
Buying questions first, then questions about the products on this page.
Can I use an ice hockey helmet for field hockey goalie?
It is not recommended. Field hockey goalie helmets are designed for the speed and angle of a hard field hockey ball, and many leagues require a field hockey-specific helmet.
Do field hockey goalies need a throat guard?
Yes, a throat guard is strongly recommended and required in many competitions.
What size goalie helmet do I need?
Measure your head circumference above the eyebrows and match it to the brand's chart. Junior and senior sizes differ.
How long does a goalie helmet last?
Replace it after any serious impact, if the shell cracks or the cage bends, or when it no longer fits snugly.
Is a throat guard included with goalie helmets?
Sometimes. Check the listing, and buy one separately if it isn't included.
Which brands make helmets?
We compare 14 helmets from 6 brands: OBO (5), TK (4), Gryphon (2), Longstreth (1), PG Sports (1) & Lizixin (1).
What are the best helmets for beginners?

Which helmets are made for kids and juniors?
Youth options include TK 3 Junior U-12 Field Hockey Goalie Helmet, OBO Yahoo Youth Field Hockey Throat Protector Youth & PG Sports Bauer Prodigy Hockey Helmet Only. Always check the size or length on the Amazon listing before you buy.
